Behind the Scenes at the Chicago Marathon

Behind the Scenes at the Chicago Marathon

Each year Superior Ambulance provides EMS for the Chicago Marathon. Let’s go behind the scenes at the Chicago Marathon with a look at some numbers, pictures, and video of the Superior Ambulance team in action. First, take a look at these stats!

BY THE NUMBERS

45,000 marathon runners

140,000 EXPO ATTENDEES

12,000 RACE DAY VOLUNTEERS

200 MEDIA PERSONNEL

2,500 MEDICAL PERSONNEL

1.7M ON-COURSE SPECTATORs

Those numbers add up to approximately two million people. So how is Superior Ambulance able to provide care for a group that size? We certainly have ambulances on the scene but we also use bikes, golf carts, walking patrols, and more.

Most of the Superior Ambulance team works at the Chicago Marathon due to the sheer size of the amount of people who might need care. Working that day requires getting up before dawn. Buses begin leaving our Elmhurst headquarters by 2 a.m. as teams are taken down to Grant Park for check-in and safety checks.
