    The first private ambulance service in DuPage County, IL, Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Service, Inc. was named after the service level its founders intended to provide all patients. Fifty years later, Superior has grown to offer patients and municipalities many services within the EMS industry. Superior offers ground and air transport for a vast variety of patient needs, including but not limited to Advanced Life Support, Basic Life Support, Critical Care Transport and Bariatric Transport.

Services We Provide

The Critical Care Transport Team provides transport of critically ill and injured patients, including:

  • Transfers to higher levels of care (ER to ICU, Floor to ICU, ICU to ICU):
    • Neurological
    • Cardiovascular
    • Respiratory
    • Medical
    • Trauma
    • Transplant Services
    • Pediatric Critical Care
    • High Risk Obstetrics (limited)
  • Scene Responses, transports to ERs
  • Discharges to lower levels of care (Rehabilitation, Long Term Acute Care, Skilled Nursing, etc.)
  • Wait and Returns (round trip transfers for appointments, procedures)
  • Critical Care ambulances may also respond to ALS, BLS, and assistance requests

 

The CCT Team can provide a variety of patient care services including:

  • Advanced patient assessment
  • Cardiac monitoring
  • Airway management including medication-assisted intubation with paralytics, video laryngoscopy
  • Ventilator management
  • CPAP, BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula therapy
  • Specialty gases (Inhaled Nitric Oxide, Heliox) *with facility equipment, respiratory therapist
  • Advanced pharmacology
  • IV Pump management and medication titration
  • Blood product administration
  • Central line access and maintenance
  • Femoral sheath maintenance
  • Chest tube management
  • Doppler assessment
  • Ventricular assist device management (LVAD, RVAD, BiVAD, PVAD)
  • Invasive hemodynamic monitoring (Arterial Line, CVP, PAP/Swan Ganz Catheter)
  • Transcutaneous, transvenous, and epicardial pacing *with facility equipment
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump management
  • Impella management
  • ECMO transport *with facility equipment, perfusionist
  • External ventricular drain management
  • Intracranial pressure monitoring
  • Continuous bladder irrigation

In addition to routine BLS/ALS ambulance equipment, CCT vehicles may carry advanced airway management devices including video laryngoscopes, cardiac monitors with temperature and invasive pressure monitoring capabilities, ventilators, IV pumps, dopplers, portable suction, and additional medications (dependent on state and system protocols).

 

Our Team

The Critical Care Transport Team is staffed by Critical Care Paramedics and Critical Care Transport Nurses. Critical Care Paramedics have at least 3 years ALS experience and have completed a university-accredited critical care training program (CCEMTP, CCP). Transport Nurses have at least 3 years of critical care ICU or ER experience. All staff participate in an ongoing education plan to remain current in standards of care, are expected to obtain board certification, and are certified in ACLS, PALS, NRP, and Trauma.

Our Services

The Critical Care Transport Team’s ground ambulances are deployed throughout Superior Ambulance’s service area in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. The CCT Team in Illinois is a “Tier 3” team staffed with Critical Care Paramedics and Transport Nurses. The Illinois CCT Team can also transport patients to/from Northwest Indiana. The Indiana & Michigan CCT Teams are “Tier 2” teams staffed with Critical Care Paramedics.

Critical Care patients can be transported via air or ground. Our “Tier 3” flight program is available for requests in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. When unable to fly, our flight teams are able to respond by ground. Learn more about our flight program here.

Our Fleet

Superior Ambulance operates a fleet of Type I, Type II, and Type III ground ambulances.

The Critical Care Transport Team primarily utilizes new Mercedes Sprinter Ambulances.
